The blond remained quiet, eyes fixed on he floor below as Lina was doing his hair. It was early in the morning, way too early for him to be up. He shrugged lightly upon seeing blond locks of hair falling down on h is shoulders and to the floor. If there was something he hated about this day the most, it would have to be the get-up. All of the fancy things to wear, to say- it just was not him at all. He glanced up when Lina commented on his hair, then gazed emptily at the mirror. Well, he couldn’t say it didn’t look nice either. As a reply, he simply shook his head to reset the hair and then sighed. ”Thanks.” He mumbled quietly before taking a clearer look at Lina.
Well, if he thought he looked ridiculous, at least she didn’t. She looked beautiful, he thought as he glanced away without saying a word. And so sadly happy. Though this was no day to beam, this was no day for laughter or even smile… But seeing Lina try hard like that, he just had to try as well. Giving a small, weak smile, he nodded and got up. There was no need to make the city wait, he thought as he walked out, keeping Lina’s hand in his own.
The outside was oddly quiet, as calm and as steady as every year on the same date. Teenagers - and even kids - were dressed as nicely as their parents on that date, but neither of them spoke words. It was all too quiet. The walk to the reaping, between Lina and himself, was as quiet as every other’s walk, he thought, and that was alright. There was no words to be told, there was no comfort anymore on that very day. He felt uneasy.
He let go of Lina’s hand after they reached the town’s square and walked towards the other boys, registrating himself without saying a word, and then waited with everyone as the obnoxious lady in yellow spoke. She was the only person left that was happy in the entire district ten, he thought bitterly as he glanced to the floor and got lost in his thoughts. There was no need to listen to her, she was to say the same bullshit she said every years up until now. Useless, it was all useless.
He half-heard a name, and then there was a dead silence, a few words spoken around, and then people were staring at him. The blond blinked, a little at lost. Why were they looking at him like they were sorry? His name hadn’t been picked, she picked a girl. A girl…
Then it hit him. He felt a sharp pain to the chest, and found himself unable to talk or move, frozen in space with both fear and anger and every feelings possible hitting him in every direction as he saw her walk to the stage. No, not her.
What. She could feel people turning to her, eyes on her as if she was a prey and yet everyone was way to scared to say something. She felt her heartbeat rise with every moment, as if it tried to suffocate her before she had to move. The eyes changed from her to Eric and she closed her eyes, body trembling under pressure before he felt her lips breaking open softly bleeding. She made steps forward in the ridiculous dress she was wearing, every step shaky and insecure. Never in life had she felt more scared. I have to go into this horro. I might never see Eric again. Shit… Her heart was racing and she brought her hand to her chest before climbing the stairs up. All she could hear was utter silence as she got up mixed with soft memories of a time where she only had to fear for her life because of the hunger.
Eric… Please stay safe.
Finally up on that stage she felt as if she was about to be suffocated. Somewhere she saw the golden almost white blond of Eric in the crowd and her heart took up it’s pace before she suddenly found herself again on that stage in front of the whole district looking up. This wasn’t a nightmare. This pressure was real.
Her eyes seemed dull and dead and yet her body was terribly shaking and trembling like she was a little newborn lamb. She never showed fear but this moment she really was scared. Scared this might be the moment when she had to part from her beloved Eric.
Her death might be decided this very moment. And there was no way back.
You forgot someone
her sister Naru which comes on place number one together with Eric something bad happening to
but yes something happening to these people is one of those she really dispises
what comes also often is the nightmare of them saying they don’t need her anymore and that she should vanish. Basically hearing these things from Ryou,Naru,Eric or Akaru is the worst
If you’re right - I’ll tell you about a recent one.
"So. Look how nice and silky your hair is now Eric." She said with a soft hum, cheeks blushing. This surely was no day to smile and yet she couldn’t help but smile at her best friened, his hair softly shortened and combed through. The ends still softly curled out, but it was exactly something like that that made him look incredibly cute. The blond looked back, eyes falling on her own hair that she had left open, soft white since that day her sister died of hunger. Since that very day her almost as blonde hair became white. It had been years since that happening. Many winter and summer went through and yet nothing had changed a single bit. Everything was the same horror. Every year the same.
"Come on, we gotta go." She said and watched him rise from his seat. Both had lost what was most dear to them and it only made them bond even more. She had faith in their luck. If until now nothing happened then it meant it would be over soon right? Only some years more and it would all be over. It had been about 8 years since after Naru Raynols death Erics parents took her into their family. And just 3 more years before the yearly nerveousness about the reaping would be over. It would be over soon.
Taking Erics hand and squeezing it she gave him a warm smile. A charm she always gave him before these days. Lining up for the registration of the females she went through the whole procedure without any problem, not a flinch not a blink, before standing somewhere in the crowd yet making sure she could see Eric from her point. Locking their eyes together she smiled again to reassure him everything would go well, before a frilly dressed woman came to the stage.
So it begins.
